School budget comes in around $22.4 million

(Feb. 2 , 2012 ) After multiple rounds of budget presentations from each school and department over the past month, the School Committee is set to vote Tuesday on a proposed $22.4 million spending plan that represents a slight increase over last year’s $21.9 million budget.


While school officials were faced last year with a “perfect storm” of circumstances – the combination of a loss in federal funding and unexpected spending increases – putting the schools $593,000 over budget, this year, superintendent Michael Cozort said, the total amount needed to be trimmed to meet the School Committee directive of a balanced budget is $180,000, making life a little easier.


“I pointed out what the School Committee directives were that they passed in October: a balanced budget that linked to district and school goals, and supported programs that not only deal with academic but social, emotional and physical well-being of our kids,” said Cozort. “In other words, don’t cut the arts. What’s really essential?”
